And honestly, I don't care. I guess I'll resign from the project.

Hi,

there seems to be script called mediawiki-sf, to automate exactly this task. http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=153625

All one need is a mysql database (can be requested by project admin) and project admin rights to run the script. I can assist you with the installation (dealing with LAMP and SolarisApacheOraclePHP is my job).
